I am one of hundreds of people living in two small towns, connected by a bridge across the Connecticut River, who need your help. The NH DoT is very far into the reconstruction of a narrow, dangerous bridge unsuitable for bike and pedestrian use across the River. This “reconstruction” of the iron bridge between Thetford (VT) and Lyme (NH ) is penny wise but pound foolish. It will cost more than $11 million of (mostly Federal) money just to “restore” the bridge there now; and the current plan requires a long closing of the crossing, which will be devastating to the schools, businesses, families and commuters facing a 24 mile round trip detour for at least 18 months.
We need your help to impose an immediate temporary hold on the process so there is time to develop solutions including a temporary bridge and a safer and possibly more cost efficient alternative bridge design.
